Teatro Tao sa Tao
Teatro Tao sa Tao
Started out as
an organic volunteer movement during the 2022 National
Elections. The initiative primarily
involved performing artists, with several hailing from various professional groups and others working in a
freelance capacity.
The group quickly went viral for their flashmobs and "tao-sa-tao" (person-to-person)
campaigns in various parts of Luzon, which then inspired other independent groups from far-flung communities to
replicate the model in their own capacity.
After the polls, many of the active participants came
together with
the staunch conviction that the work has just begun. Teatro Tao sa Tao believes that art is a powerful tool for
igniting change, and that it is the artist's responsibility to harness it to initiate important societal
conversations, create spaces for people to tell their stories, and promote capacity-building action for the
protection and promotion of our basic human rights.
Teatro TST believes that to empower people through
the
arts, we are not to dictate the message, but rather, to engage individuals and communities in the process of
recognizing their condition and dialoguing about how to move forward. To do this effectively, the group has
formed a training team composed of industry experts which ensures that members are able to hone their craft and
experiment with a variety of performance techniques, whether they involve movement, music, acting, and even
improvisation.
An education team has likewise been formed, with the objective of ensuring that issues
that
performances touch on are well-understood and can be handled with awareness and the appropriate sensitivity.
Teatro TST may thus be likened to a laboratory, where it is safe to experiment and growth in both skill and
advocacy is nourished.
With the protection and promotion of human rights serving as the impetus for
combined
action, Teatro TST has staged several performances in a variety of formats, each one tackling an aspect of our
societal condition. One of the most significant among the early performances of the group was its July 13, 2022
piece, a combination of movement, music, and spoken word, that was staged at the official launch of the Human
Rights and People Empowerment Center, for which Teatro TST serves as the cultural arm.
The group stages
about
one performance a month in different locations, such as the Bantayog ng Bayani, the HRPEC rooftop, cafes, and
streets, among others -- often with the possibility of engaging in a dialogue with the audience. As the group
continues to grow, develop, and connect with more communities, it is the fervent hope of Teatro TST that we be
instrumental in planting seeds in communities that equip them to use the arts as a tool for self-determination
and empowerment.
